Skye Sutherland

Artist Statement

Guided by creativity and collaboration, I strive to craft solutions that meet real-world needs, amplify underrepresented voices, and inspire resilience. Rooted in the principles of nature (its balance, adaptability, and interconnectedness), my work weaves natural themes and processes with modern technology. Much of my work is focused on healthcare or community contexts, bringing an understanding of how design has the power to transform lives.

Whether I’m climbing trees, stomping through the mud or in the studio covered in paint, I use design to promote healing, reduce stress, and foster a sense of belonging by always looking to nature as a source of inspiration and comfort. For me, design is fundamentally about people. Through participatory approaches and immersive research, I aim to tackle practical challenges while uplifting individuals and communities, using design as a tool to connect, restore, and empower.

Artist Bio

I am a designer specialising in people-centred solutions that improve well-being and strengthen communities. With an MSc in Design for Healthcare and a BDes in Textile Design, my work blends creative exploration with practical problem-solving across healthcare, youth empowerment, and community design. I always take any opportunity to learn new skills to blend with my traditional print training, like creative coding and projection mapping! My practice often involves collaboration with healthcare professionals, educators, and communities, ensuring designs are grounded in empathy and real-world needs. Notable projects include tools for parent-baby bonding in neonatal care, designing awareness campaigns for people with Multiple Sclerosis, and interactive artworks in both public and museum contexts exploring how play can enhance the human experience. I’ve exhibited work at trade shows in London and presented my research at the Design4Health conference in Sheffield in 2024. Whether crafting textile- based designs or immersive environments, I am passionate about using design as a means to inspire connection, comfort, and resilience.
