Tricia Anderson

Artist Statement

Tricia Anderson  Dance artist and visual artist

I grew up in a Perthshire town on a river with nearby hills and spent many hours outdoors throughout my childhood. I was a good athlete and artist and dance became my perfect art, combining both kinaesthetic awareness and physical ability. Even as I watch the river or the sea I am aware of its movement as well as the changes of light.

As a dance artist and choreographer, movement is my life. Drawing and painting have nourished my creative process. I felt that dance often leaves no trace of the process in the same way. What is left is but a shadow of the final work and even this work is transient.

This thought led me to study for a master’s at DJCAD where I made a film using dance, animation and film footage to visualise emotion. This is an ongoing quest to combine all my skills to express what I see or feel.

Artist Bio

Tricia has been a dancer and choreographer for many years, working across all ages and ability. She has a movement degree with minor in Art and Philosophy.

Her film ‘Affectionately yours’ combined drawing dance animation and film to visualise elements of the life of Norman McLaren, film maker and animator. He was also her father’s cousin and part of her research revealed a shared kinaesthetic quality. Since Lockdown in 2020 Tricia has returned to her drawing and painting and is constantly exploring news way to collaborate with other artists and to combine these art forms. She led a Glenshee artists walk a few years back and in 2024 she led a workshop at Tentsmuir for Artmovesfife using movement and drawing in the sand to interpret the landscape. She has also collaborated with Poets.

She lives by the river Tay, with a view of the constantly changing tides and light, and cares for a garden and orchard.
